Newmarket, Suffolk -travel information and accommodation
Newmarket, situated in Suffolk in East Anglia, is best known for its great tradition of horseracing. This pretty market town boasts two well-kept racetracks as well as many stud farms, including the most prestigious of all, The National Stud. So not surprisingly Newmarket also goes by the title of the horseracing capital of Britain. This association goes back to the time of Charles I, when Newmarket was his chosen place to enjoy this regal pastime. This and the fact that royalty throughout the ages, including our present royal family today who still follow the sport very closely, has given horseracing the accolade of being the ‘Sport of Kings.’
Charles II also
stands out as a very keen fan of the sport, so much as
that he even had a palace built in Newmarket so that
he could spend more time in the area. The palace is
well worth visiting both to see the remains of his
private living area and to visit the Tourist
Information Office that is also housed within the
palace.
In addition, the surrounding countryside offers an ideal location for a quiet break away from town life. There’s an abundance of clear open grass and heath land, as well as forests and the chalk downs. Cycling is especially popular thanks to the flatness of the fen’s landscape and there are many well guided cycle paths through some of the most scenic areas.
